Finding Motivation When Confidence Wavers
Ever found yourself silently asking, "Am I good enough? Is this working?" If so, this post is for you.
Starting and growing a business is no small feat. You pour your energy, time, experience, and heart into something you truly believe in, and yet the journey can feel uncertain, overwhelming, and at times, deeply disheartening.
A recent conversation with a friend, someone I admire immensely, sparked this reflection. She’s currently living and working abroad, building her own creative business from the ground up. Independent, innovative, and full of passion, she's also navigating the stark reality of feeling removed from the support systems she once relied on.
Her story echoes my own. And I suspect, it might sound familiar to you, too.
With nearly 20 years of experience in recruitment, career coaching, HR, and talent strategy, I’ve had the privilege of supporting thousands of individuals globally. My work has always been centered on helping people find clarity, gain confidence, and move forward with purpose.
So when I launched my own business, I believed the impact I'd made would speak for itself. I genuinely assumed my network would rally around me, advocate for me, and help amplify my work.
But in many ways, it’s felt like starting from scratch. And that’s been both humbling and eye-opening. It made me reflect on the nature of impact, how it's remembered, and how it carries forward. I've learned that not every ripple creates a visible wave. It's a tough lesson when you've given so much, but it's a valuable one in self-reliance and redefining expectations.
I've come to realise I'm not alone in this experience. Many of us, especially those building businesses, go through seasons where our own confidence wobbles. We feel stuck when it comes to fueling our own motivation. But this reflection has served as a powerful reminder: the very tools I've shared with countless individuals still work. Now, I get to use them on myself.
So let me say this, for you, for me, and for anyone else on this road:
You are good enough. Your work matters. Your ideas hold immense value.
If you're questioning that, it's okay. It doesn’t mean you're off track. It means you care deeply about your mission. And that's not a weakness, it's a strength.
How do we reconnect with our confidence when it wavers? How do we reignite that motivation when doubt takes over and recognition is hard to find?
Let's take a step back and re-center, one focused, purpose-driven action at a time.
Start With a Grounded Reset
Sometimes, the most productive thing we can do is pause.
Compartmentalise your focus. Instead of trying to do everything at once, break your tasks into clear, manageable pieces. Focus on what’s next, not what’s overwhelming. Clarity always brings calm.
Take time to reflect and reset. Step away from the 'doing' and reconnect with your 'why'. Revisit your mission. Journal, brainstorm, or create without pressure. Reconnecting with the reason you started can help unlock fresh motivation.
Track your wins in real-time. It’s so easy to wait for a ‘big win’ before celebrating, but the small ones matter most. Momentum builds through progress, not perfection.
Mini Challenge: Set aside 15 minutes every Friday to write down what you achieved. Who you helped. What worked well. Even if it feels small, it’s a step forward. This habit alone can refocus your mindset. Need more help with structure and prioritisation? Read This.
Rebuild Confidence From the Inside Out
Motivation isn’t always about sheer energy. Often, it’s about regaining clarity and conviction.
If you're feeling disconnected or unsupported, ask yourself: What specifically is making me feel unseen or unsupported right now? And what small, actionable step can I take today to begin shifting that feeling?
Here’s how to begin:
Reframe the Story You’re Telling Yourself
Instead of: “Why hasn’t anyone supported me?” Try: “Where can I communicate my value or my ask more clearly or consistently?”
Instead of: “Am I actually good at this?” Try: “What tangible proof do I already have of my impact—and how can I confidently share it?”
Redefine What Success Means to You Success doesn’t need to look like likes, followers, or six-figure months, especially when you're just starting or in a quiet growth phase. Maybe for you, it’s creative freedom, genuinely helping people in a meaningful way, or simply creating something you're deeply proud of. Let your values define success, not fleeting comparisons!
Find Your People (Your True Advocates) Reach out to those who truly see you, understand your mission, and uplift you without you having to ask. Share where you’re at—vulnerability can be a profound strength. Let them support you. You don’t need to carry it all on your own. And remember to offer that support back; sometimes giving encouragement is the exact thing that reminds us of our own strength and value.
Move From Stuck to Strategic
Clarity and confidence return most powerfully when we pair mindset shifts with deliberate action. Here’s how to create that momentum:
Use the Right Tools and Structures: Create SMART goals to keep you focused and accountable. Set clear expectations for what success looks like and what’s realistic in your timeline. This is your roadmap, not a rigid prison. Need help setting SMART goals? Read this.
Work in Short, Focused Sprints: Productivity isn’t about pushing yourself non-stop. Work in intense, focused bursts (e.g., 45-60 minutes), then intentionally rest. That’s how you protect your creativity, prevent burnout, and sustain your energy.
Ask for Specific Feedback: Don’t be afraid to ask, “What resonated with you most here?” or “How could I improve this to be even more impactful for you?” Feedback isn’t about criticism, it’s about connection, growth, and continuous clarity. Learn more.
Know Your Audience Deeply: Who are you truly helping? What are their core struggles and aspirations? Do a light competitive analysis to understand how your unique voice can cut through the noise and speak directly to what they need. Use those insights to authentically guide your messaging and services.

Get Comfortable Being Seen: Promoting your work isn't vanity; it's essential visibility. You have something genuinely valuable to offer, and people can’t engage with what they don’t know exists. Showing up authentically, sharing your insights, and celebrating your small wins is how you build trust and expand your connection.
Remember Why You Started
You launched your business for a reason. You believed in something so deeply that you took the courageous risk to share it with the world. That takes immense courage. And it deserves to be nurtured, especially by you.
When confidence wobbles, revisit your wins. Compartmentalise overwhelm, prioritise your next steps, and reconnect with your true advocates. Create space for creativity to flourish again. Most importantly, remind yourself what truly lights you up, and why that unique spark matters to the world.
Your voice is needed. Your work is valuable. Your contribution is meaningful.
Keep showing up.
Keep sharing your message.
Keep going even when it’s hard.
You’ve got this!
And if you ever feel like you need clarity, structure, or someone to gently remind you of your own magic, I’m here.
